- Dumfries and Galloway is one of Scotland’s best kept secrets
- An easy-to-access region from England, Northern Ireland and Central Scotland
- Small towns and villages of character with many events and festivals throughout the year
Dumfries, the largest town and administrative capital of the region, offers the perfect base for your holiday in Galloway. Caerlaverock Castle, Sweetheart Abbey, and Drumlanrig Castle are all nearby and within easy reach; and the town itself is steeped in history. Once home to Robert Burns, you'll be able to visit his former home or stop for a drink in his favourite establisment, the Globe Inn.
The Dumfries & Galloway region is home to three of Scotland's national scenic areas, as well as the famous Galloway Forest Park, the largest forested area in the UK. A rural area with a sparse population and no major cities, Galloway has very little nighttime light pollution and as such makes for perfect stargazing conditions. In fact, since 2009, Galloway Forest Park has been designated by the International Dark-Sky Association as only the fourth Dark Sky Park in the world, and the first in the UK.
